Mihajlovic on mountain Starica: Remediation must be completed, there is no compromise when it comes to human lives

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy, prof. Zorana Mihajlovic, Ph.D., said during the site visit of the works on Mountain Starica, which are carried out due to the rehabilitation of the rock mass, that the facts and the opinion of experts are the only arguments for discussions on this topic, that the works carried out on Mountain Starica are not anyone's whim or arbitrary decision. but that the profession and the findings of the inspection stand behind them and reiterated that everything is public.

"I am glad that today in Majdanpek all those who dealt with Starica Mountain in any way and people from the Ministry, MPs and members of the Parliamentary Committee for Environmental Protection, the mayor of the municipality of Majdanpek, representatives of the company "Ziđin", the director of the Institute for mining and metallurgy, designers who worked on technical documentation for rock rehabilitation, professors from the Faculty of Mining and Geology in Belgrade and the Technical Faculty in Bor. We are all here to show that the works being carried out on mountain Starica are not anyone's whim, they are not an arbitrary decision, but that they are backed by expertise and the findings of the inspection, that for everything there are completed and approved projects and all the necessary permits, and that everything can always be shown, that there is nothing secret or hidden," said Mihajlovic. She stated, after talking with citizens and activists, that the restoration of the rock mass on mountain Starica is necessary and that the profession agrees with that.

"I came to talk about the facts and to avoid politics." I'm here because the bottom line is to explain that everything is done in accordance with the law, with design and technical documentation, in accordance with approvals, permits and the inspection order, and everyone in Majdanpek and in Serbia should know that. I believe that most of them have been misinformed through some media that there are some bad people here who want to destroy Starica. Remediation is done exclusively for safety. Even if there was no mining, if we stopped everything, the remediation would have to be completed. But I believe that none of us here wants to close the mines in which the state owns 37 percent and in which more than 1,500 people work in Majdanpek. The Ministry has been in existence for less than two years, and during that period there were more than 50 inspections at the "Zijin" company. We can disagree on many topics, MP Jovanovic and I, just as we disagree, and debate and argue, but we cannot argue about people's safety. Because rehabilitation of Starica is not a question of ecology, even less of politics, but above all a question of safety", she said.
