Mihajlovic: Reducing dependence on one supplier is the only way to be energy safe

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mining and Energy, prof. Zorana Mihajlovic, PhD, said that the formation of the Regional Working Group will contribute to reducing dependence on one supplier and increase energy security in the region, and that Serbia's goal is to provide more gas suppliers, because that is the only way to be energy secure.

"Today, we had the first working group in which all countries are partners who want to reduce dependence on one supplier, in our case it is dependence on the Russian Federation. If we had worked earlier on diversifying not only routes, but also suppliers, it would have been easier, but the whole of Europe has relaxed. It is high time we did everything we could to have more suppliers, because that is the only way to be safer. We know what wars and crises mean, and that is why it is especially important that we act together and provide sufficient amounts of energy. "Increasing energy security and diversification in many European countries should have happened earlier, not waiting for the crisis and realizing how bad it is to depend on one supplier, whoever it is," she said.

The regional working group is part of the EU's Energy Purchasing Platform and the proposals will be part of the EC's preparatory scenarios for implementing a joint plan for more affordable, secure and sustainable energy (REPowerEU), to be presented in mid-May.

"It is important that this meeting also sends a message of solidarity and togetherness, because some things are above politics. "There are also EU member states, representatives of the EC, the Energy Community, but also other countries that are not in the EU, but are important for the entire supply chain, such as Azerbaijan, or countries that are in the process of joining, such as our country and Northern Macedonia." she said in Sofia, where she participated in the meeting of energy ministers "Southeast Energy Transition - Regional Cooperation for Energy Security, Diversification and Transition".
